Annual sports awards handed out

Rower Sverri Sandberg Nielsen has won this year’s Sportsperson of the Year award, the main award handed out at the annual sports awards show in Tórshavn yesterday.
Nielsen won silver in the world championships earlier this year, a result which secured him a place in the Olympic games, representing Denmark, in Japan next summer.

“This is a great honour for me,” said the rower in his acceptance speech. “Although I represent Denmark in international competitions, I always feel that I row for my home country of the Faroe Islands.”
Handballer Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu won the Best Young Athlete award for his role in the Under-17 national team’s sensational European Open win this summer.
Høgni Kunoy Dávason won the Sports Club of the Year for setting up the Hwarang taekwondo club at the age of ten.
Earlier this year, Dávason won gold the Nordic Taekwondo Championship.

The Sports Initiative of the Year award went to Eydnudeildin Føroya, which is a handball club for children with special needs.
Súsanna K. Hansen was handed the special Poul E. Petersen award for her longstanding work as a coach, assistant, committee member for Tórshavn-based handball club Kyndil.
