Prime Minister Aksel V. Johannesen’s constitution proposal may not be brought before Parliament after the summer break.
The proposal will be withdrawn when Parliament sits again on 29 July. Any MP is free to resubmit the proposal, but not much support appears to be available from the opposition.
The leader of Sambandsflokkurin (the Union Party) says no. The leader of Fólkaflokkurin (the People’s Party) says the lack of progress in this matter is a sign of the Prime Minister’s weakness.
However, the leader of Miðflokkurin (the Centre Party) would like to see the proposal in the next Parliamentary sitting. The leader of Sjálvstýri (the Self-government Party) was not available for comment.
Prime Minister Johannesen said yesterday that if the opposition does not support a resubmittal, there is little point in pursuing the proposal any further. He will, however, continue his dialogue with the opposition party leaders.
“I will ask them again if this is what we really want, and if they are willing to cooperate then of course I will resubmit the proposal,” said the Prime Minister.
